JetBlue to end direct Burbank-Orlando flights

first_img“Orlando has never been a top destination over here,” he said. “It was a bold experiment to be sure.” JetBlue still remains a popular airline since entering the Burbank market in May 2005. The company’s New York-bound flights often are at least 90 percent full, Gill said. According to airport tallies, about 41,000 passengers flew from Burbank in June on the carrier, compared with 24,000 the same month a year ago, after the company doubled daily departures to six. Dervin said the company continues to operate direct flights to Ft. Lauderdale from Long Beach, and Burbank passengers can still reach Orlando with a stopover in New York. “We offered the wrong nonstop,” she said. “We’ll just keep doing it till we get it right.” [email protected] (818) 546-3304160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. BURBANK – JetBlue will end direct flights from Bob Hope Airport to Orlando, Fla., in November, just four months after launching the route, officials said Tuesday. The low-cost carrier – the only one with a daily nonstop flight between Burbank and Florida’s holiday and film-production destination – will close the route Nov. 13. Company spokeswoman Jenny Dervin cited high fuel costs and weaker-than-expected demand. “It’s the two working together,” she said. “We weren’t able to sell enough tickets on the flight to break even, and that’s against the rising cost of jet fuel.” AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREWhy these photogenic dumplings are popping up in Los AngelesThe route seemed a good match when the Forest Hills, N.Y.-based carrier launched it June 30. Both Disney and Universal have resorts and studio operations in Orlando. Only Southwest Airlines had served the city from Burbank, with as many as three stops creating a 12-hour flight. JetBlue’s direct flight is just under five hours. Still, the travelers didn’t flock to JetBlue. “We thought it was a natural fit that we would get a good mix of people traveling on leisure and on business,” Dervin said. “Turns out, folks going from Florida to California, they’ll either take our Ft. Lauderdale-Long Beach flight or they’ll connect.” Bob Hope Airport spokesman Victor Gill said the airport’s traditional market has been the West Coast and the Southwest. last_img read more

Flooding in Jeff City a good possibility through spring

first_imgWill you end up having to find another route to work because of the flooding this spring?Cole County Public Works Director Larry Benz says it’s a throw of the dice.“With Missouri especially, you can see high water levels [even] if there might not be any rainfall in our area.”Benz says, even though the North Jefferson City levee can hold back 30 feet of floodwater, lower crests can still flood areas on the south side of the river.last_img

When your laptop computer is lost or stolen…

first_img ” A recent study commissioned by Intel and conducted by the Ponemon Institute shows that a lost or stolen laptop is worth far more than just the hardware. When everything is taken into account, such losses cost a company as much as $115,000 and an average of $49,000. Unfortunately, it’s a growing reality for hundreds of thousands of consumers, as between 600,000 and 1.5 million laptops are stolen or lost each year in the U.S. alone. Clearly, it’s foolish for business and consumers to ignore this increasing threat and not have computer security software and anti-theft products, with the idea that it only happens to other people. 1) It’s a major headache to replace the content; 2) It’s costly to replace the laptop;3) It invites the misuse of the sensitive data files you have stored on it;4) It opens the door to the potentially bigger problems of data loss and identity theft. Wondering how much costs could be reduced if lost or stolen laptops had a security product like Phoenix Technologies’ FailSafe™ [ http://www.failsafe.com] – a theft-deterrence product that helps “protect, track, and manage lost or stolen laptops” using a BIOS embedded, tamper-resistant tracking agent.,Unfortunately, it’s a growing reality for hundreds of thousands of consumers, as between 600,000 and 1.5 million laptops are stolen or lost each year in the U.S. alone.
