The Chinese firm did not give a comparable figure for 2013, but operating margin for the whole of last year was 12.2 per cent.“Driven by increasing investments in LTE networks worldwide, Huawei has further solidified its leadership position in mobile broadband,” claimed Cathy Meng, Huawei’s CFO. “We also achieved quality and sustainable growth in our consumer business thanks to the increase of brand awareness and smart devices sales worldwide.”Meng said that Huawei’s flagship smartphone, the Ascend P7 (pictured), is now being sold in more than 70 countries and regions. And though Ascend P7 was only launched in May, Huawei claimed recently it had already shipped more than one million of them.IDC, a research firm, calculated Huawei shipped 13.7 million smartphones in the first three months of this year, making it the world’s third-biggest smartphone vendor.Even so, the Chinese firm trails, by some distance, market leaders Samsung and Apple. They shipped 85 million and 43.7 million smartphones respectively during the same period, while Lenovo (12.9 million) and LG (12.3 million) are not far behind Huawei’s Q1 smartphone tally.Meng highlighted too a strong pick-up in software and services, which helped maintain “steady growth” in the firm’s carrier network business. She added that efforts in the enterprise space were also beginning to pay off and that Huawei had seen “accelerated growth” in this area.“We are confident that in 2014 we will achieve sustainable growth, robust operations and healthy financials,” said Meng.Local rival ZTE has also benefitted from increased operator investment in LTE, revising upwards its H1 profit guidance as a consequence. And ZTE expects 4G devices will account for 40 per cent of its total shipments this year, signalling its intent – like Huawei – to have a bigger presence in the high-end smartphone market. New Mexican restaurant coming to Broadway Plaza Shopping Center in Lenexa

first_imgA new Mexican restaurant is coming to the Broadway Plaza Shopping Center in Lenexa.Located at 9720 Quivira Road near Oak Park Mall, Black Agave Tequila Mexican Cuisine and Bar is slated to open in September. The site was formerly T3 Arcade, a video arcade business.Angel Martin Ortiz, owner of the new restaurant, said he’s looking forward to introducing customers to his menu, especially his homemade black agave tequila and poblano shrimp, a baked seafood dish with poblano peppers that remains one of his favorites.“I’m so excited that people can come and try my tequila, it’s something new for Kansas City,” Martin Ortiz said. “It’s strong, but it’s still sweet, not like normal tequila that burns you.”The restaurant will feature elements of Mexican culture as inspiration to the decor, including hand-carved chairs and tables, as well as homemade tequila from Martin Ortiz’s distillery.Martin Ortiz opened his first Mexican restaurant in Springfield, Missouri, 10 years ago, and he is opening a third one in the Northland later this year.Born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, Martin Ortiz said he has dreamed of opening a restaurant in Johnson County for at least a decade. He is planning to bring authentic tastes to Mexican dishes as well as Mexican spinoffs of other dishes from around the world. The menu features Mexican-style seafood, steak, pasta and other dishes.“My dream is to open a few here in this area,” he said, noting that he also hopes to open another restaurant in Florida. “I see so much opportunity to grow good business here. The people here are nice, they’re so friendly.”Renovations are underway, as Martin Ortiz’s crews have gutted the interior and are rebuilding the outdoor patio.“I think they’re going to enjoy the space,” he said, noting the inspiration from Mexican culture to inform the design and decor. “All my tables, my chairs, they’re made by hand, so people can come see all the hand-carved designs.”Martin Ortiz distills his own reposado and añejo tequilas. The new restaurant will offer añejo tequila samples to customers twice a day.Restaurant capacity is 300, but with the COVID-19 pandemic, Martin Ortiz said he will limit the number of customers in the dining room at one time to about 75 to 100. Employees will wear masks and complete regular sanitization and cleaning regimens, and tables will be spaced apart for social distancing. Customers can also enjoy the new outdoor seating area, which will feature a bar and fireplace.“It’s good to have a big restaurant, because I can separate 6 feet between everybody,” he added. “I’m going to try to be safe, that people can come and enjoy good food, good service.”Hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.last_img read more

Court of Appeal threshold to remain unchanged

first_imgThe Law Society has welcomed a government decision not to raise the threshold for permission to take cases to the Court of Appeal as part of a package of reforms to reduce delays. However, Chancery Lane expressed disappointment over the decision to remove an automatic right to an oral hearing when seeking permission to appeal to the court.Earlier this year the Civil Procedure Rule Committee (CPRC) consulted on ways to reduce pressures faced by the Court of Appeal’s civil division. Work has increased by 59% in the past five years.Committee chair Lord Dyson said that in an environment where there has been no increase in judicial resources, a serious backlog of cases is getting worse and delays are lengthening. The proposed package of reforms included increasing the threshold for granting permission to appeal to the Court of Appeal from ‘a real prospect of success’ to ‘a substantial prospect of success’.Responding to the consultation, the Society questioned the impact on perceptions of fairness of the justice system if a litigant whose appeal has a ‘real prospect of success’ were denied the right to have the appeal heard.A ‘substantial’ prospect of success could also lead to satellite litigation over its interpretation and application, it warned.A statutory instrument, which comes into force on 3 October, shows that the test will remain unchanged.Society chief executive Catherine Dixon said Chancery Lane is pleased the threshold will not be raised, noting there is no evidence to suggest that the current test is not sufficient. She added: ‘It appears that the proposed changes were intended to reduce the Court of Appeal’s workload. The court has many important functions to perform and it is essential that it is appropriately resourced.’The redistribution of more ancillary matters is therefore sensible as it will free up the much-needed time of Court of Appeal judges to deal with substantive matters.’However, if the CPRC are to draft rules relating to delegation of powers we would recommend that such duties remain with qualified court officers (ie solicitors and barristers).’The statutory instrument states that where an application for permission to appeal is made to the Court of Appeal, the court will determine the application on paper. However, the application could be determined at an oral hearing if the judge thinks it cannot be fairly determined on paper. An explanatory memorandum published by the government states that the proposal was backed by most judges who responded to the consultation. It was not supported by most practitioners and representative bodies – with the exception of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers and human rights group Justice. Those in favour thought it would substantially reduce the amount of judicial time spent on determining applications for permission to appeal. Those against were concerned that complex appeals benefit from oral discussion of written arguments. Some litigants may also feel more comfortable expressing themselves orally, it was argued.Dixon added: ‘While we are disappointed that the automatic right to oral renewal hearing has been removed, the court’s discretion to “call in” cases and request further information does provide some safeguards to vulnerable parties.‘Nevertheless, there is still a risk that some applications – which haven’t been presented as strongly on paper as they would have in person (for example due to a language barrier) – will be dismissed as without merit.’last_img read more

OSG introduces onboard ScreeneX embedded glass screens

first_imgUSA: Currently being trialled on light rail vehicles in New Jersey and suburban trains Germany, ScreeneX embedded glass screen technology was launched in the North American market by supplier Oran Safety Glass at the APTA trade show in Atlanta.ScreeneX has already been deployed in numerous station and outdoor applications, but Israeli firm OSG sees significant potential for onboard use in the rail sector, particularly for provision of real-time information. The embedded screens would use all of the existing elements of a window or internal screen, and can be powered from the vehicle’s existing auxiliary supply. One application being trialled is the use of screens by doorways to highlight the train’s destinations and stopping patterns. ‘This could really help to reduce dwell time in suburban and metro operations, giving people immediately visible information, whether from inside the saloon or from the platform’, says Chris Grilliot, Vice-President of Sales, Rail & Transit. ‘Advertising and entertainment services could also be added, meaning the window delivers a return on investment.’last_img read more

Arrow Video FrightFest Glasgow 2020: Zombie For Sale review

first_imgA medical taste for a new diabetes medication goes wrong and triggers a zombie outbreak in a small rural community. The Park family are surprised when a young man (Ga-ram Jung) happens upon their property and bites the widowed patriarch Man-duk (In-hwan Park). The family fear their father is going to be turned into a zombie but the bite actually restores his youth and energy. Nicknaming the young man Jong-bi, the family decide to profit from him but their money-making scheme doesn’t quite go according to plan. The zombie genre is one that is completely and utterly swamped right now. In the aftermath of the hey-day of The Walking Dead, you don’t have to look far to find another zombie film or TV series. That being said, Lee Min-jae’s Zombie For Sale is at least trying to do something different and relishes in playing against the well-established rules of the zombie genre. Tackling the film and its subject matter with a sense of humour, Lee Min-jae has crafted an entertaining and pretty funny film.Credit: Arrow FilmsIt’s fairly obvious that things are going to take a turn for the worse and the film attempts to lull you into a false sense of security before that happens. It doesn’t wholly succeed in doing that but it does have a lot of fun getting you to the inevitable ‘things go bad’ twist. Jong-bi is surrounded by the quirky Park family, and the daughter Hye-gul (Soo-kyung Lee) starts to fall in love with him, even though their relationship really isn’t viable. While I’ll definitely give Zombie for Sale a thumbs up for trying something different, it does unfortunately drag things out for too long. Running at almost two hours in length, the film would have benefitted from some editing to bring it down to the 90-minute mark. Getting to the twist takes much longer than it should have done and once it arrives, the feeling of inevitably somewhat hampers its impact.Credit: Arrow FilmsZombie for Sale is a solid and entertaining film that tries to do something with a very tired and oft-treaded genre. There’s definitely plenty to enjoy here but you may find yourself starting to tune out before the credits role. The film clearly draws inspiration from some of the greatest zombie films ever made and it’s clear that the cast had a blast making it. Zombie fans will lap it up but if you’re a bit worn out by the genre, it might not hit all the marks you’re hoping for.Cast: Jae-yeong Jeong, Ga-ram Jung, Nam-gil Kim, Soo-kyung Lee, Ji-won Uhm Director: Lee Min-jae Certificate: 18 Duration: 112 mins Released by: Arrow Filmslast_img read more
