Atlanta backup quarterback Matt Schaub completed 11 of 13 passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Atlanta Falcons to a 27-21 comeback victory over the Indianapolis Colts Saturday night in the NFL Tokyo 2005.The two Super Bowl contenders kicked off the NFL preseason game in front of 45,203 fans at Tokyo Dome. The first preseason game for both teams was a wild affair, with eight turnovers combined, which excited the Japanese football fans present. The Colts got on the scoreboard first. Free safety Bob Sander intercepted a pass off Michael Vick, which was tipped off by receiver Brian Finneran, to give the Colts the first possession of the game. Starting the drive at the Atlanta 47-yard line, Peyton Manning connected short passes to Marvin Harrison and Bryan Fletcher before hitting Troy Walters with a 2-yard touchdown strike with 6:45 remaining in the first quarter. The Falcons wasted no time responding in their second possession, showing their strong running game which led the league last season. Warrick Dunn, who rushed for 1,106 yards and career-high nine touchdowns, carried seven times for 38 yards during the scoring drive that was capped by a 28-yard field goal by Todd Peterson with 14:56 to play in the second quarter. As expected, Vick left the game after the drive and so did Manning after throwing an interception to Falcons linebacker Michael Boley in his second possession in the second quarter. In limited action, Manning completed 6 of 9 for 36 and a score and an interception, while Vick went 4 of 7 for 51 yards and a pickoff. Vick also added 10 yards rushing on a scramble.Among other star players, Edgerrin James rushed for 20 yards on three carries; Harrison had three receptions for 20 yards for the Colts. For the Falcons, Dunn rushed for 48 yards on 10 carries; Peerless Price gained 41 on three receptions.Schaub replaced Vick early in the second quarter and guided the drive earned by Manning’s interception to a 36-yard field goal by Peterson, cutting the Colts lead to 7-6 with 9:33 remaining that quarter. After forcing the Colts a punt, the Falcons held the ball at their own 5-yard line. But running back Jason Wright fumbled the ball and let it pop up. The Colts linebacker Kendyll Pope picked it up and ran into the end zone for a 14-6 lead.Schaub soon got to work for the Falcons, leading Atlanta to two consecutive scoring drives. The second-round draft pick in 2004 connected with Price with a 24-yard pass during a 7-play, 61-yard scoring drive that made the score 14-13 with 3:02 left in the first half. The Falcons soon got the ball back when defensive end Chauncey Davis recovered a Colts fumble. Schaub also threw a 21-yarder to Michael Jenkins to set up a score by Fred McCrary in the next possession. McCrary juggled a pass from Schaub before he caught it as he was falling down on the 2-yard line. Then McCrary rolled his body into the end zone without being touched to give the Falcons a 20-14 lead before the half. After a scoreless third quarter, the Falcons scored on a Wright’s 1-yard rush for a 27-14 lead. The Colts countered when third-string quarterback Travis Brown’s 3-yard touchdown pass to John Stanford with 4:02 to play in the game cut the Falcons lead to 27-21. They advanced to the Falcons’ 30-yard line with 90 seconds remaining in the game, but Brown threw three incomplete passes before being sacked and the Falcons ran out the clock to wrap up the win.The Colts had some concerns on offensive backups. After Manning left the game early in the second quarter, the Colts offense was shut out until Brown’s scoring pass. Second-year Jim Sorgi, who replaced Manning, failed to find the end zone before leaving the game late in the third quarter. He completed 6 of 10 passes for 68 yards. Brown was 10-of-14 for 136 yards and a score with an interception. The Colts open the 2005 season at the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 11 while the Falcons play a rematch of last year’s NFC championship game with the Philadelphia Eagles at home in the season-opener on Monday Night Football the following day. The only chance the Colts and Falcons have of playing each other again this season will be when the final two teams advance to Super Bowl XXXX in Detroit. It’s too soon to talk about Mahome’s life after football. But he would be a winner in that competition too – and the United States and the world would be better off than we are right now. by Alvin Reid, St. Louis AmericanThe once-in-a-lifetime quarterback just signed a once-in-a-lifetime contract.Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs signal caller who won an MVP Award, a Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP honors before the age of 25, is now the highest paid athlete in American history. His 10-year contract extension could earn him $503 million, with $477 million in “guarantee mechanisms,” and a no trade clause. If the guarantees aren’t met, Mahomes can opt out of the deal. In addition, Mahomes’ deal has a $140 million injury guarantee.Mahomes immediately said he was grateful to “further invest in the Kansas City community,” during a Tuesday afternoon online press conference.“Obviously, I wanted the security to take care of my family and future generations of my family,” Mahomes said.“But I want to keep great football players around me. I’d be lying if I sat here and said it doesn’t help me having great players all around me on the field. I knew this would be the right way to do it, to accomplish both things that are important to me.”His on-field brilliance and sparkling personality have made him the face of the NFL – and his contract is worth more than Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout’s 426.5 million deal.In an NFL that does not have a grand history when it comes to Black quarterbacks, Mahomes is the most essential part of its immediate future. The 10th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Mahomes would start one game that season – and win it. Alex Smith was traded to the Washington Redskins, Mahomes took over the Chiefs and suffered an excruciating overtime loss to the New England Patriots in the 2018 AFC Championship game. Last year, after a scintillating playoff run that included three come-from-behind victories, the Chiefs won the franchise’s first Super Bowl in 50 years. His career record is 24-7 and he is 4-1 in the playoffs. Needless to say, he is beloved in Kansas City.Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt called Mahomes “one of the most prolific athletes in all of sports.”“With his dynamic play and infectious personality, he is one of the most recognized and beloved figures to put on the Chiefs uniform. He’s an extraordinary leader and a credit to the Kansas City community, and I’m delighted that he will be a member of the Chiefs for many years to come.”He is also devoted to working against brutality and challenging his country to overcome the racism that impacts every one of its citizens.Could you imagine a Black quarterback, saying “Black Lives Matter,” in a video with other Black NFL stars, then, within weeks, becoming the game’s highest-paid player in history?Part of this happening is the atmosphere calling for change – but most of it is that Mahomes is indeed a very special person. His intelligence surpasses his football talent, something that would seem impossible.Kansas City Times sports columnist Vahe Gregorian, who bolted the Post-Dispatch several years ago for greener pastures on the west side of the state, wrote Tuesday, “Mahomes isn’t just an amazing, transformational player who influences everyone around him on the field. He is a principled, charismatic leader of the highest character in ways that reverberate off the field.”“Mahomes is fundamentally wholesome, charitable, courteous and empathetic, the sort of person who looks people in the eye and really listens and knows part of his role is to make a difference for others.“Someone Kansas City can embrace as an ideal ambassador for the city.”Oh my gosh, could St. Louis use somebody like him at this point in its history.Gregorian visited Mahomes’ hometown of Whitehouse, Texas a year ago and came away impressed.“People talked about how he was the guy who always reminded the football coach of teammates’ birthdays and looked out for the ‘last kids’ picked on teams,” Gregorian wrote. His seventh-grade English teacher Dee Landers said Mahomes “was always good to have … walk in the room; since he’d smile and make everyone feel part of it all.”Now, Mahomes is the first athlete with a contract worth half-a-billion dollars. He’s not even 25.His contract extension runs through the 2031 season, and he’ll be 36.You can run for president when you’re 35. You just have to turn 30 before you take office to run for U.S. Senate. Big HBCU newsSaying, “I need to make the HBCU movement real so that others will follow,” five-star basketball recruit Makur Maker announced last week that he would play for Howard University. Howard, an HBCU university in Washington, D.C., beat out finalists UCLA, Memphis, Kentucky and dozens of other schools for one of the nation’s top talent at center.Maker immediately went into a recruiting-mode when he wrote, “I hope I inspire guys like Mikey Williams to join me on this journey. I am committing to Howard U & coach Kenny Blakeney.”Williams will be a sophomore at San Ysidro High School in San Diego, California, when school resumes and the guard is ranked third by ESPN in the class of 2023.In June, before Maker announced his plans, Williams wrote on Twitter, “Going to an HBCU wouldn’t be too bad. ”After Maker’s invitation to join him at Howard, Williams wrote, “On your side my boy let’s shock the world!!!”Maker is the first five-star recruit and highest-ranked college basketball prospect to commit to an HBCU since the ESPN recruiting database started in 2007. He is a cousin of Detroit Pistons forward Thon Maker, was born in Kenya and then moved to Australia. He then moved to California in 2015.Price isn’t rightLos Angeles Dodgers pitch David Price became the biggest name in Major League Baseball to opt out of the 2020 60-game regular season. “I have decided it is in the best interest of my health and my family’s health for me to not play this season,” wrote Price, whose two children are under the age of 4. Price is surrendering $11.9 million by not playing.“It was the toughest decision I’ve had to make, knowing I’m making the right decision for myself and my family,” Price told USA Today. “We’ve been in conversation [with the Dodgers] for a long time about all of this.”Meanwhile in St. Louis, relief pitcher Andrew Miller has become a rational spokesperson for all MLB players, not just his fellow Cardinals.“I think there’s still some doubt that we’re going to have a season now,” Miller told USA TODAY.“By no means is this a slam dunk. We’re trying, we’re going to give it our best effort, but for me to sit here and say 100 percent would be a lie.”Mike Trout of the L.A. Angels and Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants, two of the game’s biggest stars, are wavering as to whether they will play this season. If they both opt out, it could lead to a tidal wave of other players doing the same.“I’d be surprised if you asked any player, if they gave you a hard-line, ‘No way, I’m not going to opt out ever’ answer,” Posey told the San Francisco Chronicle. A new Tatum ‘doOur own Jayson Tatum showed for his first workout with the Boston Celtics with a new hairstyle. It’s kind of a fluffy, curly short Afro kinda deal. You have to see a photo to try and understand it.But one thing is for sure. His game is on point.“He walked in the first day and couldn’t miss a shot,” said teammate Danial Theis.Former Chicago Bull and NBA Scottie Pippen told “The Jump” on ESPN, “I think this has been a breakout season for Tatum. He started this season sort of on a mission to separate himself from the other players that have grown and developed as well as really showing some leadership, I think, by becoming an All-Star this season.”“And I think if (his) team is to make a run, it has to rely on Tatum’s ability to carry them offensively. And I feel like he’s totally ready.”The Reid RoundupCiting a shoulder injury that dates back to the early NBA season, Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal will not participate when the season resumes later this month. “This was a difficult decision and one that I did not take lightly as the leader of this team,” Beal said in the team statement. “I wanted to help my teammates compete for a playoff spot in Orlando, but also understand that this will be best for all of us in the long term. I appreciate the support of my teammates, the fans and the entire organization and look forward to returning next season to continue the progress we have made.” Beal will be eligible to be traded at the season’s conclusion. … If there is a college basketball season going on in 2021, Howard University will host Notre Dame on Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 18… On Friday night, July 3, I dropped my cell phone into dishwater. I instantly thought that the July 4 weekend might mean a delay in getting a new one. Why couldn’t MLB have predicted that getting COVID testing results to teams might be delayed?? The St. Louis Cardinals were among the teams that cancelled workouts Monday until results arrived… The guy who is president lashed out with lies against NASCAR and its lone black driver Bubba Wallace in regard to the noose incident more than two weeks ago. He also insulted the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Indians for considering a name change… FC Dallas has withdrawn from the “MLS is Back” tournament in Orlando after 10 players tested positive for COVID… Dallas Cowboys free agent signee Dontari Poe says he will kneel during the national anthem – regardless of what owner Jerry Jones thinks about it. He also said Jones should speak out on the fight against racism in America. “I hope he comes out and shows his support… You are an owner of an NFL team – you get what I’m saying? The majority of this team are these people that are being oppressed. So even if you are not going to be in the forefront, we need to know we have your support in that type of way.”Alvin A. Norwich City continued their good start to the Championship season as they dispatched rivals Ipswich Town 1-0 at Portman Road for their third win in four games. The Canaries were dominant for most of the clash but in the end it was a solitary Lewis Grabban goal which earned them all three points, and the bragging rights, in the East Anglian derby. After a quiet start the visitors were forced into an early change in Suffolk as Ryan Bennett was forced off with a shoulder injury and replaced by Javier Garrido.Having waited 40 months for the derby, both sets of fans created an electric atmosphere at Portman Road but on the field they only had shots from Daryl Murphy and Steven Whittaker to cheer in the opening 20 minutes. After 24 minutes though, the home fans were silenced. After a Norwich corner was poorly cleared, Dutchman Alexander Tettey was allowed to head the ball back into the area and, with the Ipswich defence at sixes and sevens, Lewis Grabban drifted behind the unaware Cole Skuse to nod beyond a stranded Dean Gerken for his fourth of the campaign.David McGoldrick nearly handed the Tractor Boys a leveller as he flashed a clever Skuse free-kick past the right-hand upright but it was Norwich who seemed the more likely to score as Kyle Lafferty and Nathan Redmond went close at the opposite end.The diminutive Jay Tabb never shirks his responsibility in the Ipswich midfield and his cross after break nearly saw Murphy score, but the former Celtic man could only nod past the post when unmarked. At the other end meanwhile, Grabban was a constant threat. The prolific frontman netted 22 times last season for Bournemouth and already looks set to continue his fine form after a summer move to Carrow Road. He should have done better though when he attempted to chip Gerken seven minutes into the second half.Around the hour-mark the Canaries pressed forward to double their advantage as Grabban and Bradley Johnson kept Gerken and his defence on their toes.McGoldrick then slammed into the side netting in the closing stages as Town attempted to find the equaliser they sought, but ultimately Norwich were able to hold on for victory. 1 Norwich match-winner Lewis Grabban

German Football Federation (DFB) president Reinhard Grindel has admitted that he could have taken a better approach as regards to the situation surrounding Mesut Ozil.Ozil was widely criticized for posing for a picture with the president of Turkey Recep Tayipp Erdogan. After Germany’s poor outing at the just concluded FIFA World Cup in Russia, the bulk of the blame was laid at Ozil’s feet by the fans, media and former German internationals.Ozil subsequently announced his retirement from international football and Grindel now concedes he could have dealt with the situation in a different manner.“Regarding the racist attacks, I could have taken a clearer position at some points and stood by Mesut Ozil,” Grindel told Bild, according to SportsKeeda.“I should have been clear with my words. Such attacks are completely unacceptable. I regret that he felt deserted by the DFB.Ozil incident won’t affect hosting bid Obinna Echi – September 4, 2018 Reinhard Grindel, the president of the German Football Association (DFB), believes the Mesut Ozil incident will not derail the Country’s Euro 2024 bid.The Arsenal playmaker retired from…“It is important to say though, that I said nothing about his sporting performance after the World Cup. This Tuesday marks the day in which Argentine manager Jose Nestor Pekerman steps down as the Colombia National Team’s manager, he does it with a heavy heart but he believes that this is the right moment to do so. The Federation still won’t announce any possible replacements for the job, but the most talked-about name was Juan Carlos Osorio until he became Paraguay’s new boss just a few days ago. Pekerman is going to take some well-deserved free time after his long time with the national team, all the most prominent players who had the chance to share the squad with Pekerman, expressed their gratitude to the manager for the six most impressive years of the Colombian National Team in football history.#GraciasPékermanPara la FCF fue un orgullo contar con el Director Técnico que nos clasificó a dos Copas Mundiales de la FIFA, Brasil 2014 y Rusia 2018. ⚽️ pic.twitter.com/BjZvTZjg2b— Selección Colombia (@FCFSeleccionCol) September 5, 2018During those six years with the major squad, Pekerman took Colombia to two World Cup finals and transformed the ‘Cafeteros’ into one of the most spectacular teams in the two tournaments he managed the team. The most impressive performance came at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which took Colombia all the way to the tournament’s quarterfinals and gave us spectacular performances from each and every one of the players at the time with a stellar James Rodriguez. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Pekerman took the team to the finals once again, but they were eliminated in the round of 16 by England in penalty kicks. Despite coming back early from the tournament, Colombia’s performance was very well-accepted by the whole country and they received the players like heroes after they returned to South America. The general feeling was that Pekerman needed to remain as the manager, but the Federation failed to reach an agreement with him and they announced his departure this Tuesday after a meeting. After leading them to two #WorldCup finals, ??Jose Pekerman has stepped down as ??Colombia coach after 6 and a half years in charge➡️https://t.co/1s3M2ABIEK pic.twitter.com/Vel5B7gLTb— FIFA World Cup (@FIFAWorldCup) September 4, 2018Neymar the reason Vinicius didn’t make Brazil debut, says Tite Andrew Smyth – September 7, 2019 Brazil boss Tite revealed that Neymar’s “perfect” body language meant Vinicius Junior was denied his long-awaited international debut Pekerman was angry for the way in which the media treated him in the last month, he is convinced that they invented many lies about his possible exit and he demanded respect during a press conference and singled out a specific media outlet by the name of Gol Caracol: “Watching Colombia, where they stand on the FIFA Rankings and watching them play a different football, is something that has brought joy to a lot of people and that’s what I choose to take from my experience here.
