By Mark Carpenter-After seeing their boys team make a run to the Elite Eight last season, Peebles basketball fans took the same ride this season, but this time it was with their girls squad. The Lady Indians made an unexpected run through the Southeast District’s Division IV Tournament, taking down two number one seeds in the district finals and regional semi-finals on their way to the Elite Eight. That Elite Eight match up came on Saturday, March 9 when the 19-7 Lady Indians and a very large portion of the community traveled to Pickerington North High School to face the 23-4 Shadyside Lady Tigers. The Lady Indians put up a fight, leading early, then fighting back in the final quarter before a late 10-0 run by Shadyside sent the Lady Tigers to the Final Four with a 55-45 victory. Before that appearance in the Elite Eight, the Lady Indians made it to that point with one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. On Thursday, March 7 at Jackson High School, Peebles matched up with the highly ranked Portsmouth Notre Dame Lady Titans, the team that has ousted the Lady Indians from last year’s tourney in the district championship game. This time they faced off one step further on the tournament trail and showing “no fear”, the underdog Lady Indians used a clutch 9-0 run in the fourth quarter to shock favored Notre Dame and move to the regional finals with a 46-42 win.It was an all-around team win for the Lady Indians as Coach Billie Jo Justice used seven players and got contributions from all of them with a balanced scoring attack that saw two girls hit double figures and another score 9.“You can’t come out and play scared,” said Coach Justice after the win. “When you play good, aggressive defense it takes the nerves away. We were a little nervous at the beginning but we came out of that, every game now is just a bonus.”Maybe with a few big-game jitters, the Lady Indians struggled out of the gate, scoring just two points in the game’s first six and a half minutes, a baseline jumper by Tatum Arey at the 5:52 mark of the first quarter, the first points of the game for either side. A very well-prepared Peebles defense held the Lady Titans to just a pair of field goals in that same time span so the Lady Indians only faced a 6-2 deficit. That deficit vanished before the end of the first quarter as jumper by Lilly Gray and a basket by Jacey Justice deadlocked the game at 6 apiece after eight minutes of play. After the low-scoring first period, the offensive pace picked up in the second stanza with Gray getting stick back on the first Peebles possession and Notre Dame getting baskets from Katie Detwiller and Isabel Cassidy to take a 10-8 lead. The 6’4” Detwiller is an imposing presence in the paint and after a Justice three-pointer put Peebles back on top, Gray made a play that set the tone for the game. the sophomore forward got the ball on the left side of the bucket, took the ball right at Detwiller and hit a reverse layup, “no fear.” A jumper by Jerilin Toller capped a 7-0 Peebles run that gave the Lady Indians a 15-10 advantage.“We work on those reverse layups in practice and we worked a little in practice yesterday against a big and the girls knew that Detwiller was going to block shots so we stepped up and hit some shots from the outside when we needed to.”The Lady Titans bounced back with a 7-0 run of their own, all of the points scored by sophomore guard Ava Hassel that gave Notre Dame a two-point lead which disappeared on an Arey basket with 40 seconds left in the first half and the half ended with the two teams all even at 17.Notre Dame fired the first salvo of the second half, getting a three-point play from Detwiller on their first possession, matched a minute later by a Justice three ball that tied the score at 20. A three-pointer by Hassel gave the lead back to the Lady Titans , who later took a four-point advantage on a basket by Olivia Smith, but the scrappy Peebles squad wasn’t going away, hanging right in the game with a Hope Brown free throw and baskets by Arey and Justice. An Arey put back with two minutes to go in the third period cut the Notre Dame lead to 29-28, but the Lady Titans used a 6-2 run to end the third quarter, all of the points by Detwiller, to take a 35-30 margin into the final eight minutes of play. That lead ballooned to seven on yet another Detwiller score on the first Notre Dame possession and for a fleeting moment, it looked as if the Lady Titans were going to take control, but the Peebles squad had other ideas. With Notre Dame on top 39-34 with 3:58 to play, the Lady Indians turned the momentum meter in a big way, scoring the game’s next 10 points, beginning with an Arey basket and a Justice three that tied the game at 39. A Kylie Sims free throw gave Peebles the lead for good and when Detwiller was called for an intentional foul, Gray hit one of two from the stripe to put Peebles up 41-39.It was Gray again going to the line with 1:35 to play and hitting both shots and when Sims hit another freebie, the Lady Indians had a five-point lead with 1:15 to play. A Detwiller three-point play kept Notre Dame alive but the Lady Titans didn’t score in the game’s final minute. Meanwhile, the senior Sims hit another pair from the stripe with 47.1 seconds remaining and though Notre Dame had a couple of late opportunities, they couldn’t convert and when the final horn sounded, the Lady Indians could celebrate revenge and a trip to the regional finals, taking down the mighty Lady Titans by the final score of 46-42.The Peebles scoring attack was led by 15 points from Tatum Arey, who turned in a big game on both ends of the court. Jacey Justice scored 13 , a total that include a trio of three-point goals, while Lilly Gray added 9.“They’re chasing Jacey a lot so we’ve talked to her about seeing things before she crosses half court and I though she did a nice job of finding the open man,” said Coach Justice. “We’ve been playing with so much heart and so hard and it’s proved successful. Tonight was all about our defense, we knew the points would come.”Notre Dame suffered just their second loss of the season and was led by Katie Detwiller’s game-high 26 points, but the Peebles defense did a bang-up job on the rest of the Lady Titans, with Ava Hassel’s 8 points being the next highest total in the book.Notre Dame6 11 18 7—42Peebles6 11 13 16 —46Notre Dame (42): Schmidt 0 0-1 0, Hassel 3 0-2 8, Smith 1 0-0 2, K.
