first_img Share UWF Ranks First Among Active GSC Schools With 50 Championships PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida claimed five Gulf South Conference championships in 2008-09, marking the program’s 50th conference title across all sports.  Former GSC member Troy leads with 58 championships, and UWF is the active leader at 50.“We’ve been in the conference for 15 years, and it’s an amazing accomplishment to win 50 GSC titles over that span,” said UWF Athletic Director Dave Scott.  “It’s a credit to the work that our coaches and staff have done in building this into a premier Division II program.  It also shows the excellent work that (former Athletic Director) Richard Berg did in guiding us in the transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II.”In the fall, the Argonauts won GSC titles in men’s soccer, women’s soccer, and volleyball, and they added two more in the spring with women’s golf and women’s tennis.  UWF leads all active GSC members with 26 men’s championships and 24 women’s championships despite joining the conference more than 20 years after its inaugural season in 1971-72.Of Troy’s 58 GSC titles, 50 of them came on the men’s side, highlighted by a record 16 cross country titles and 13 golf titles.  West Florida ranks second at 50, and they have more championships than any other school in women’s golf (four), men’s soccer (six), women’s soccer (five), and women’s tennis (10).  The Argonauts’ East Division rival North Alabama ranks third overall and second among active schools at 44, thanks in part to its dominance in volleyball (16 GSC titles).  Current member Delta State and former member Jacksonville State are tied for fourth at 40 championships each.For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.COMPLETE GSC CHAMPIONSHIPS BREAKDOWNPrint Friendly Versionlast_img
