No. 7 UWF Climbs to No. 1 in the South Region

first_img SKILLMAN, N.J. – The No. 7 University of West Florida men’s tennis team (12-2) climbed from No. 4 to No. 1 in the South Region in the latest edition of the Campbell’s/ITA College Tennis Rankings, it was announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) today. West Florida also has three singles players listed in the top 20 in the South. Two UWF doubles tandems are also ranked in the region.West Florida is coming off of a highly successful three-day swing. On Monday, UWF topped Barry, which is ranked No. 2 nationally, 5-4. Tuesday, the Argos defeated No. 5 Lynn, 5-4. Yesterday, UWF got its third straight top 10 and South Region victory, as the Argos defeated No. 8 Rollins, 6-3.West Florida tops the South and is followed by Barry at No. 2 and Lynn at No. 3. Gulf South Conference foe Valdosta State is listed at No. 4. Rollins is No. 5, and Saint Leo is No. 6. Florida Southern, New Orleans, Delta State and Florida Tech round out the top 10. West Florida defeated Florida Southern, 8-1, earlier this season.In singles, UWF has three players listed in the top 20 in the South. Junior Kevin Ducros (Aix-en-Provence, France) made his first appearance of the season in the regional rankings, coming in at No. 4. Ducros redshirted last season due to an injury. He is currently 6-4. On Monday, he defeated Barry’s Marco Mokrzycki, who is currently the No. 8 player in the nation, 7-6, (7-4), 4-6, 6-4. Bruno Savi (Santana do Livramento, Brazil) is listed as the No. 6 singles player in the South. He was listed at No. 4 in the preseason edition of the regional rankings. Savi is 9-2 this season. On Tuesday, he defeated No. 12-ranked Vlad Cirla of Lynn, 6-4, 6-2. The following day, he defeated No. 11-ranked Jeff Morris of Rollins, 7-6, 6-1. Argonaut Andrey Pozhidaev (Sochi, Russia) held steady at No. 9. He is 10-2 on the season. In doubles, Ducros and Savi, who are 11-3, form the number one duo in the South. Leandro Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Pozhidaev are ranked No. 6. UWF junior Mike Lue (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and sophomore Domenico Sano (Macaray, Venezuela) are ranked No. 10.The Argos will return to the courts on Friday as they host No. 22 Drury at 9 a.m. adn NCAA Division I Nicholls State at 2 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex on the UWF campus in Pensacola.
