(Photo by Bill Stockland) CLEVELAND, Miss. – What looked to be an ideal start to a difficult road trip ended up being one of the toughest losses of the year as the No. 4 West Florida baseball team gave up six runs in the ninth inning to fall to No. 7 Delta State 6-5 on the road Friday night. The Argonaut (31-7, 22-5 GSC) offense produced five runs off 10 hits, and junior Dawson Brown (McDonough, Ga./Georgia Perimeter) held the Statesmen (32-9, 22-5) scoreless through 7.2 innings. But, three UWF relievers combined to allow six runs on six hits and a pair of walks in the ninth. After leading off the second inning with a single, UWF took advantage of back-to-back errors by DSU to score two unearned runs highlighted by an Alex Greene (Orlando, Fla./Hagerty HS) RBI-single to right field to lead 2-0.Senior Austin Southall (Baton Rouge, La./Chipola) extended the Agro lead to 3-0 with a solo homer to right-center field in the fourth, and senior Cliff Covington (McIntosh, Ala./Alabama Southern CC) added even more insurance with a two-run double in the seventh.DSU threatened with two on and two out in the eighth, but Matt Vollenweider (Canton, Ga./Chattahoochee Valley CC) struck out the final batter of the inning to keep the shutout momentarily intact.A normally dominant UWF bullpen that entered the game with a 2.27 ERA was unable to hold the lead in the ninth.UWF finishes the series with a doubleheader at DSU Saturday, April 26, at 1 p.m. The Argos must win both games to clinch the regular-season conference title and the top seed in the GSC Tournament. For information on all UWF athletics, visit #ARGOS#Delta State Univ. 6, West Florida 5 (04/25/14 at Cleveland, MS)———————————————————————-West Florida…….. 020 100 200  –  5 10  0      (31-7, 22-5)Delta State Univ…. 000 000 006  –  6 11  3      (33-9, 22-5)———————————————————————-Pitchers: West Florida – Dawson Brown; Matt Vollenweider(8); Alex Stevens(9); Kevin Peters(9)and Garrett Flynn.
