I’m going to try to explain the playoff system and where Wellington is currently positioned. Wellington has a 2-1 record, which puts it tied for the fourth seed with three other teams in the Class 4A West bracket. So come week #9, if Wellington remains in the fourth seed position it would play like the 13th seeded team based on records at home. That is why every game is important and each victory helps a team tremendously. Wellington has 13 points. It beat Collegiate and Clearwater by more than 13 points, but lost to Andale by more than 13. It currently is tied with Ulysses. Click here for the overall 4A district standings… Groundskeeper Chad Whaley said the field will have a new added feature. Homecoming Sept. 7 Sept. 21 Oct. 12 home Labette County Oct. 19 Rose Hill Andale 28 Wellington 0 Augusta 31 by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Wellington has looked rather good against teams not named Andale and Friday night’s homecoming game is another opportunity for the Crusaders to pick up another victory.Still, prosperity tends to elude the Crusader program. Two key starters are out with mononucleosis this wee: offensive lineman Jake Soria and running back Grey Hatfield. That most certainly can’t help especially Hatfield who ran for 196 yards and four touchdowns last week against Clearwater. But that’s football, when there are 56 players on the roster, something is sure to happen usually in bunches.Augusta comes into the game 1-2 after taking a 34-6 licking against Buhler. leading just 7-3 at the end of the first quarter and 21-3 at the the half. The Orioles had 29 yards passing and 81 yards rushing.Augusta is young, returning four offensive and four defensive starters from a 5-4 squad. As always, Wellington has lots of distractions this weekend being that it is homecoming. A loss could damper the festivities.Wellington-Augusta game at a glance:Homecoming: Augusta (1-2) at Wellington (2-1), Friday at 7 p.m. You know the drill. But by game time, it is expected to taper off and be quite pleasant with the temperatures in the upper 60s. Oh, by the way, sunset is at 7:29 p.m., so the bulk of the game will be under the lights.Series history: We don’t have a full listing of all the games ever played between Wellington and Augusta, but will pick it up at the turn of the century. There have been some dandies since that time especially in 2004 and 2005 when both teams were playoff teams.Trivia: Shoutout to the Wellington-Augusta 2004 tilt when Wellington won an unbelievable game in the last second when a kickoff was returned for a touchdown for victory.
