first_imgLiverpool boss Klopp: What I want from an attacking midfield signingby Paul Vegas9 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveLiverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has detailed what he is seeking in an attacking midfield signing. The Reds were linked heavily with a new attacking midfielder last summer following the January departure of Philippe Coutinho and had agreed a deal with Lyon for Nabil Fekir before the plug was pulled on the transfer.”Football changed in the last 20-30 years so you don’t rely on one player on the pitch anymore,” said Klopp, talking on a New Balance Football promotional video. “It has changed massively.”They are today rather offensive players, changing the game, demanding the game, dominating the game.”You need a lot of skills to do that, you need to be technically really close to perfect because to make the right decision at the right moment you should not waste time with controlling the ball to be honest.”The most difficult thing in football is making perfect decisions under timed pressure.”It looks so easy and it’s so difficult so you should not think about that, you have to do it instinctively.”It’s today the kind of number eight on the pitch, they have the ball most often, they pass most often and so they make most of the decisions or at least they are involved in most of the decisions.” TagsTransfersAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

PSU’s Herb Hand Upset With Pitt’s John Peterson After “Olive Branch” Selfie

first_imgHerb Hand takes selfie with Pitt's John Peterson. For a few hours, it looked like the beef between offensive line coaches Herb Hand and John Peterson had been squashed. A truce does not appear to have been reached after all, however.Earlier this offseason, Peterson and Hand had gone back and forth on Twitter debating which program – Penn State or Pitt – was the best in the state of Pennsylvania. It continued Thursday, as Peterson purposely put an “X” in front of both “State” and “College” when explaining where he was headed for a high school coaches convention. But Peterson eventually ran into Hand at the meetup, and the two took a selfie together. In tate ollege for the Pennsylvania high school coaches convention! #H2P— john peterson (@coachjpete) February 13, 2015My friend and I @CoachHand at the Pennsylvania high school coaches convention! Friday, he took to Twitter to tell his followers that he should have checked Peterson’s feed before agreeing to what he called an “olive branch” selfie. Here’s What The Simulated BCS Rankings Would Look Like After Week 13

first_imgA simulated BCS rankings through week 13.Yesterday offered a lot of clarity in the College Football Playoff chase. Oklahoma clinched the Big 12 title and assured themselves a playoff berth with a win over Oklahoma State, and the Michigan State-Iowa Big Ten title tilt is set up as a de facto CFP play-in game. Alabama and Clemson will also make the four-team field, provided they take care of business in their respective conference title games next week. Everything seems pretty cut and dry at this point.Still, it’s always interesting to wonder how things would have shaken out under the old BCS system. The guys at BCS Know How have been releasing updated, simulated BCS rankings each week. Here’s a look at how the BCS would have sorted the contending teams with one week to go in the season. This week’s simulated “BCS” rankings are here: pic.twitter.com/UUX60ozRlZ— BCSKnowHow.com (@BCSKnowHow) November 29, 2015I don’t think the protest for an Alabama-Clemson championship game would be too loud, but the fans in Norman, Okla., have to be happy this system isn’t in place anymore. After all, the Sooners would be the odd team out as of now.last_img read more

Juventus to sanction loan for €30m addition Romero

first_imgJuventus will allow Cristian Romero to spend the 2019-20 campaign on loan at Genoa despite investing €30 million (£26m/$33m) in securing his services, Goal can confirm. The 21-year-old defender is due to officially become a Bianconeri player this summer.Goal revealed back in February that the Serie A champions had a deal in place and Genoa president Enrico Preziosi then confirmed as much in May. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? He said: “You all know that there is a negotiation in progress – [Romero] will go to Juventus.”The sale of Piatek and that of Romero will definitely put the club’s accounts in order. The sale of Piatek, from a corporate point of view, was a very good move.”Genoa’s finances are very healthy. We will have no debt to the treasury within this year.”Romero is considered to be a hot prospect for the future, but Juventus are prepared to let him further his development outside of Turin.A loan switch is set to be sanctioned, with only the terms of that agreement set to be thrashed out.It could be that Romero is allowed to stay on at Genoa for a single season or across a two-year spell.Juventus have a long-term contract in place with Romero so time is on their side when it comes to welcoming him into the fold. There remains intense competition for places in the ranks of the Italian title holders and there is a desire to avoid stunting Romero’s progress. The Bianconeri are also in the process of wrapping up a deal for Sassuolo loanee Merih Demiral. The Turkey international is considered to be better placed than Romero to step immediately into first-team plans in Turin, despite also being just 21 years of age. That means that an Argentine youngster will have to seek out minutes elsewhere.Romero will be allowed to complete his apprenticeship away from the glare of the spotlight at the Allianz Stadium before being given his chance to shine.Juve have no need to rush him, despite parting with a sizeable fee, as they are also strengthening their defensive options with other deals.A summer switch had been mooted for Daniele Rugani, but the 24-year-old Italy international is now poised to sign fresh terms through to the end of the 2023-24 campaign.last_img read more

This day, that year: India knock Pakistan out of 1996 World Cup in dramatic quarter-final

first_imgThis day, that year: India knock Pakistan out of 1996 World Cup in dramatic quarter-finalLed by Navjot Singh Sidhu’s 93, India clinched a 39-run win over Pakistan in the quarter-final of 1996 Cricket World Cup at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on March 9advertisement India Today Web Desk New DelhiMarch 9, 2019UPDATED: March 9, 2019 16:53 IST India vs Pakistan, 1996 World Cup quarter-final: Venkatesh Prasad shone with the ball picking up three wickets in Bengaluru (Reuters Photo)India and Pakistan have played some memorable cricket matches in the past and the one that arguably tops the list is the 1996 World Cup quarter-final in Bengaluru played on March 9. It had plenty of nerve-racking moments from even before the start of the match to the final ball at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. There was plenty of buzz around the tie as it was only the second World Cup meeting between India and Pakistan. India had beaten Pakistan in the 1992 World Cup by 43 runs in Sydney.Akram pulls out with an injuryWith a plethora of superstar cricketers in both the sides, the expectations hit the roof. However, Pakistan fans faced a huge shock when their captain, Wasim Akram pulled out of the match hours before the toss with an injury. Akram’s decision created a lot of tension in Pakistan as his effigy was burnt on the streets of the cricket-crazy country.Following Pakistan’s defeat, quite a few violent incidents were reported from across the border. One fan reportedly shot his television set before shooting himself. It all began well for India as Navjot Singh Sidhu and Sachin Tendulkar stitched a 90-run stand. However, much to the disappointment of the crowd, Tendulkar fell for 31.While the likes of Sanjay Manjrekar, captain Mohammad Azharuddin and Vinod Kambli failed to convert their starts, Ajay Jadeja played a blinder, hitting 45 runs from just 25 balls to help India post 287 on the board. In reply, Pakistan began the run chase with a bang. The opening duo of Aamer Sohail and Saeed Anwar took the Indian fast bowling attack to the cleaners, scoring 84 runs in the first 10 overs. The crowd at the Chinnaswamy Stadium were watching the on-field action in disbelief but local boy Javagal Srinath gave India the first breakthrough removing Anwar for 48.advertisementPrasad-Sohail exchange adds drama to the proceedingsSohail though kept the scorers busy even after Anwar’s dismissal and brought up his fifty with an eye-catching push to the extra-cover boundary. Words were exchanged between the bowler and the batsman and Sohail pointed at the cover boundary and sledged Prasad, who was also booed by the local crowd. In a dramatic change of fortunes, Sohail was cleaned up Prasad in the following delivery after the Pakistan opener tried to repeat his cross-bat slap. Prasad gave Sohail a mouthful and a send-off as the Chinnaswamy crowd erupted in joy.Prasad made use of the shift in momentum and removed Ijaz Ahmed and Inzamam-ul-Haq in quick succession to put India in the driver’s seat. All hopes now rested on Pakistan’s experienced campaigner Javed Miandad but the former captain disappointed by getting run out on 38.Wicketkeeper-batsman Rashid Latif added impetus to the innings but lack of contribution from the lower-order helped India restrict Pakistan to 248.Prasad shone with figures of 3 for 45 while leg-spinner Anil Kumble also picked up three wickets and put the brakes on Pakistan’s scoring rate after the visitors got off to a flying start.Following the win, the streets of Bengaluru were filled with Indian supporters celebrating the moment. On the contrary, effigies of Pakistan cricketers were burnt and the reactions were violent on the other side of the border.Since the iconic India-Pakistan clash in 1996, the two teams have met at the quadrennial showpiece event four times and India have managed to win all of them.Cloud over India-Pakistan 2019 World Cup tieIndia and Pakistan are scheduled to meet in the 2019 World Cup on June 16 in Manchester. However, several India cricketers have urged the senior national team to boycott the tie following the terror attack on Indian CRPF personnel in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir.Committee of Administrators (CoA) chief Vinod Rai recently said India will continue to emphasise its stand regarding the isolation of Pakistan in international cricket. The International Cricket Council had earlier turned down the BCCI’s request to sever ties with countries from which “terrorism emanates”, saying the ICC has no role to play in matters like these. In the wake of the Pulwama terror attack, the BCCI, in a letter to the ICC, urged the world body and its member nations to sever ties with countries which harbour terror. The BCCI letter did not make a specific reference to Pakistan, which has been accused of harbouring terrorists by India. Also Read | India vs Pakistan: Top 10 cricketing momentsAlso Read | India vs Australia: All eyes on Rishabh Pant’s 2019 ICC World Cup auditionAlso Read | Virat Kohli better than Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara in ODIs: Michael VaughanAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. Ashwin Mankading: Stop judging him already, he’s not a disgrace

first_imgAshwin Mankading: Stop judging him already, he’s not a disgraceKings XI Punjab captain R Ashwin has been slammed and criticised severely after he decided to Mankad Jos Buttler during a tense Indian Premier League match in Jaipur on Monday.advertisement Akshay Ramesh New DelhiMarch 26, 2019UPDATED: March 26, 2019 18:14 IST IPL 2019: R Ashwin Mankaded Jos Buttler during Kings XI Punjab’s tense match against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur (IPL Photo)Jos Buttler resumed from where he had left last season. The England all-rounder blasted his way to quickfire half-century and was looking set to help Rajasthan Royals complete a steep chase of 185 against Kings XI Punjab in the fourth match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 convincingly.R Ashwin, the skipper of KXIP, had one last chance to stop the Buttler juggernaut as he came on to complete his quota in the 13th over of the Royals’ chase. Buttler had survived five balls and would have been more than happy to stay at the non-striker’s end in the final ball of Ashwin’s brilliant spell on a batsman-friendly wicket. However, Ashwin removed Buttler even without bowling at him. The off-spinner, known as one of the smartest minds in modern-day cricket, Mankaded the in-form Buttler.Taking note of Buttler’s habit to back up quite a bit at the non-striker’s end, Ashwin whipped the bails off when the English batsman was at it again. Ashwin appealed, Buttler looked miffed, the third umpire was called in.Buttler had to walk back to the hut. Within minutes of IPL’s first-ever Mankaded dismissal, social media was flooded with opinions. Every uncle had one, so did some of the greatest names in cricket.Ashwin was certainly not the first one to Mankad a batsman out but a glance at Twitter on Monday evening certainly gave such an impression.Embarrassing and disgraceful? Biased experts?”Embarrassing and disgraceful,” screamed arguably the best spinner this world has ever seen — Shane Warne. The Australian legend said he was “so disappointed in Ashwin” the player and the captain.advertisementAshwin’s action is well within the rules of cricket as the updated 41.16 law says: “If the non-striker is out of his/her ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out.”However, Warne didn’t stop with one tweet but he ranted on and on. The RAJASTHAN ROYALS ambassador, from a biased position himself, accused Indian cricket expert, Harsha Bhogle of bias after a Rajasthan Royals player was adjudged out in Jaipur.A little bit of scrolling down on Bhogle’s Twitter feed would have helped Warne save his face. Bhogle had been endorsing Mankading over the years and has backed bowlers who had mankaded, regardless of where they came from, in the past.Unlike doping, unlike match-fixing, unlike using sandpaper on a cricket ball, Ashwin was just aware of the situation of the laws of the game, which are available for anyone’s access on the cricket body’s official website. Lack of Sportsman Spirit?Quite a few English cricketers brought up the “sportsman spirit” issue to pin down Ashwin after Monday’s Mankade act. Kevin Pietersen, had a fallout with his own teammates after he was found texting his opposition about his captain, called the Mankading incident “a shocker” on air.Certainly, Ashwin didn’t refuse to walk after edging during a high-profile Test series like some of Pietersen’s former teammates. As Warne suggests, winning at all costs is certainly debatable but in a highly competitive environment, a player can afford to do everything that is within the rules.T20 is high pressure and takes a lot out of players. A bowler has only 4 overs to make an impact and as captain, Ashwin had the additional burden of ensuring he saw off the dangerous Jos Buttler before his spell was over. And when he saw Buttler had indeed taken that extra step forward, Ashwin did what he thought was best for his team without thinking of the reactions which were bound to erupt after. It’s important to reiterate that Ashwin is no cheat and he does not deserve all this name-calling because he acted within the rules of the game. It’s okay to talk up cricket as the gentleman’s game but please, let’s give Ashwin a break! T20 cricket has long stopped being a gentleman’s game. It’s highly competitive and winning is everything. Take, for example, the coloourful Indian Premier League. Losing teams are subjected to ridicule by their own fans – players are under constant pressure to deliver and win. When batsmen, who ever since the inception of the sport have an upper-hand over the bowlers, can switch stance and reverse sweep, bowlers should be at least left alone when they go about their job without crossing the line.Did Ashwin cross the line? Well, certainly not. Rana Daggubati to turn Tamil producer with Jersey remake. Details here

first_img India Today Web Desk ChennaiJuly 17, 2019UPDATED: July 17, 2019 17:40 IST (L-R) Rana Daggubati, Nani in JerseyTelugu actor Nani was last seen in Jersey, which went on to become a blockbuster in Tollywood. Directed by Gowtham Tinnanuri, the film is all set to be remade in Hindi and Tamil. Latest reports suggest that the Tamil remake rights of Jersey have been acquired by Rana Daggubati. With this, Rana will set foot in Kollywood as a producer. Sources close to the team reveal that actor Vishnu Vishal has been roped in to reprise Nani’s role in the Tamil version of Jersey. It is to be noted that Vishnu Vishal himself was a cricketer before he entered Kollywood.Nani’s Jersey is also being made in Hindi. Producers Dil Raju and Allu Aravind will be bankrolling the Hindi version in association with Sithara Entertainment. Director Gowtham Tinnanuri, who helmed the Telugu film, will also be working on the Hindi version. Names of Varun Dhawan and Shahid Kapoor are being considered to play the lead role in the Hindi remake. It is unclear as to who will direct the Tamil version of Jersey. The Tamil remake of Jersey is expected to go on floors later this year.Jersey traces the life of a 36-year-old cricketer who wants to prove himself in the latter stages of his career. The film also has Shraddha Srinath, Harish Kalyan, Sathyaraj and Sanusha in significant rules.India Today reviewer Janani K rated the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote, “Gowtam Tinnanuri is gutsy enough to have a non-run-of-the-mill ‘ending’ for a sports drama like Jersey. It moves you and makes you appreciate life. Jersey’s success lies in its well-packed screenplay, which will move you to tears in a few places. In a scene, where Sarah and Arjun patch up after a nasty fight, one would just tear up seeing the beautiful relationship they share on screen.”advertisementALSO SEE | Jersey Movie Review: Nani and Shraddha Srinath sparkle in excellent sports dramaALSO SEE | Karan Johar to rope in Shahid Kapoor for Hindi remake of Nani’s Jersey?ALSO WATCH | ‘I am interested in alternative cinema’Get real-time alerts and all the news on your phone with the all-new India Today app. Download from Post your comment Do You Like This Story? Kapil Dev didn’t need to resign as Cricket Advisory Committee chief: Vinod Rai

first_imgKapil Dev didn’t need to resign as Cricket Advisory Committee chief: Vinod RaiCommittee of Administrators (CoA) chief Vinod Rai on Wednesday made it clear that Kapil Dev’s resignation was not required.advertisement Indo-Asian News Service New DelhiOctober 2, 2019UPDATED: October 2, 2019 14:19 IST Former cricketer Kapil Dev (Source: IANS Photo)HIGHLIGHTSKapil Dev’s decision to resign from CAC comes after Ethics Officer D.K. Jain sent a notice to panelVinod Rai said that the letter given to trio clearly said that it was an appointment for selection of head coachAsked if that meant the conflict issue is a closed chapter, Rai refused to get into the matterCricket Advisory Committee (CAC) chief Kapil Dev might have resigned from his position on Tuesday, but Committee of Administrators (CoA) chief Vinod Rai has made it clear that Kapil didn’t need to tender a resignation as his appointment was specific to the selection of the head coach of the Indian team.Speaking to IANS, Rai said that the letter given to the trio clearly said that it was an appointment for the selection of the head coach and not an annual one.”No, the resignation wasn’t required because in the original appointment letter given to them (Kapil, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy) it was said that it was specific to that selection (appointment of head coach) only,” he said.Asked if that meant the conflict issue is a closed chapter, Rai refused to get into the matter. “Like I said before also, I would not like to prejudge the decision of the Ethics Officer,” he said. But a senior BCCI functionary said that it was indeed a closed chapter just like the matter against Sachin Tendulkar was dropped. “Yes, it does. If you remember, the same thing happened in the Tendulkar episode. So, you can say it is a closed chapter,” the functionary said. The former Indian captain’s decision to resign from the CAC comes after Ethics Officer D.K. Jain sent a notice to the panel with regards to allegations of conflict of interest as claimed by MPCA life member Sanjeev Gupta.Rangaswamy had resigned on Sunday after the trio was served with the notice to explain their stand on holding multiple positions in violation of the newly registered BCCI constitution.advertisementThe former India cricketer had said that people complaining of conflict was fine, but if the Ethics Officer picked up every complaint then it would create a difficult scenario and getting former cricketers to come into administration would be difficult.”I gave my resignation from the CAC, as also the directorship of the players association. Last night, I mailed it to the concerned authorities. Now, I can understand individuals complaining. But if the Ethics Officer acts on that then it is not worth continuing. And I think one of the pressing demands for the new BCCI committee will be to provide clarity on this conflict of interest clause and from where are they looking to get eligible cricketers in key committees,” she had told IANS.Also see:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
